Butser West 17th January 2010

Butser West 17th January 2010

Simon, Rob (Non-member) and myself took a trip down to Butser west in Simon's VW camper in the hope of some flying. It started off in usual Butser fashion with not enough wind so we practiced ground handling and Simon went para-skiing. After a while the wind picked up to soarable strength and seemingly everyone took off at the same time. It was good to get some soaring in, even if it was like dodgems! I ended up landing after turning to avoid someone straight into a horrible bit of sink which left me with no choice but a bottom landing. Walking back up the hill was tricky as the track had a very deep snow drift, upto thigh high in places!

By the time I got back to take off everyone had landed and the wind had dropped again so it was back to watching Simon para-ski. Most people decided to call it a day at this point but I stayed to pratice ground handling. I'm glad I did as the wind can on strong again and I had a lovely 20 minutes in the air at sunset. My best flight this year and I finally managed to top land Butser, yay!

I have just finished editing up a short video of the day:

Butser West Sunday Jan 24th 2010

Hi , A very nice flying day,  in fact, all day until the sun dipped out of sight. Not many modellers either which made a change.

It just might be on again tomorrow. If it is and you decide to come along please bring a windsock with you if you have one.
This will help identify the demarcation line between us and the modellers and should reduce infringement of each discipline's airspace.

Hampshire speedflying

The snow has tempted me to try speedflying.
However,we need steeper mountains!

BUTSER WEST SATURDAY 2nd JAN 2010

Hi there,  Flew over with Tips to see how it was on the hill. It looked the usual frustrating conditions on such a nice day.
We then carried  on to a microlight fly-in and met a couple of ex SSC members Clint Janes  and Sandra Reid who is the CFI and Examiner of their club.  Approx 35 microlights flew in - very busy for such a small airstrip but all went well.  Shippo

Mercury 3rd Jan

Nice start to 2010 if a little cold. There were four hangers on the hill today and it was pretty much smack on and plenty of lift. When we packed up around 3pm it had dropped enough for the paragliders to have a go.
